Keeping Your Cosmetics Fresh As Spring

Springtime is the time of year when everything is fresh and new. Your cosmetics should be, too. Keeping your cosmetics drawer up to date will make you look better and you'll have fewer chances of outbreaks and infections. Plus, what better reason to purchase those hot, new products of the season!

Do a spring cleaning on your cosmetics drawer.

  • Check ID's!
Most cosmetic companies put expiration dates on products so check yours to see if it's expired. No date? Throw out anything that's questionable.
  • Get rid of that clumpy mascara!
Ladies, you'll get rid of an unwanted boyfriend faster than that old tube of mascara! Anything that is more than 3 months old should be put to rest!
  • Orange foundation, anyone?
Foundations and concealers should be changed every four to six months. Check the color. Is it different than when you first purchased it? Chances are, if the color looks oxidized or the consistency has changed, it's time to throw it out!
  • Lip gloss, not lip gross!
Anything that goes on those lucious lips of yours should always be fresh! You would never put a dirty spoon in your mouth, right? Gloss in a pot or stick is a ripe place for bacteria! Throw out any lipgloss that is more than 3 months old. As for lipstick, wipe it gently with a tissue before replacing the top.
  • Doesn't your grandmother wear that?
For cream shadows, blushers and bronzers, if you use these great products, make sure they aren't older than six months.
  • I wouldn't use that sponge to scrub the tub!
My biggest pet peeve! A dirty, used sponge is a haven for acne-causing bacteria -- besides the fact that it is disgusting! Replace these frequently or wash them with a mild soap. This includes the puff or sponge that comes in your pressed powder or cream blush. Latex sponges wash well and keep their shape. If you are allergic to latex, try poly sponges instead.
  • Makeup brushes are not old toothbrushes.
Of course you don't throw these out! Just keep them super clean. If you apply your makeup daily (which most of us do) you should be washing your brushes at least three times a week. Don't think you have the time or inclination? Bring them in the shower with you and when you wash your hair, wash your cosmetics brushes. Smooth the hairs back into place and stand them upright in a coffee mug to dry. Don't forget your hair brush and comb!

If you follow these simple steps, you will find that your cosmetics will go on smoother and easier and your skin will thank you for it!
